Wearable Sculpture: A Look At Artist Jewels from the Post-War Period to Contemporary Times

The course will begin with an exploration of studio jewelry as it developed post-World War II across the United States and later on in Europe.

Overview

At once referred to as “mini-masterpieces” and “wearable art” jewelry made and designed by artists has become a hot topic of late. This class will examine why jewelry was a plausible artistic outlet for many prominent painters and sculptors, from Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso to Louise Nevelson and Anish Kapoor. Whether it was the opportunity to recreate in miniature what they were able to achieve on a large scale or as an altogether new outlet for their fervent ideas.

In addition to familiarizing ourselves with some of the most prominent examples of artist jewels created, we will also delve into the stories of the skilled goldsmiths and workshops who took on the task of bringing this work to life, like GEM Montebello, François Hugo, and Mario Masenza. Lastly, the class will spend time discussing the market for this work and familiarizing themselves with prominent collectors. Three lectures will be supplemented with two sessions with guest speakers, including the designer Chus Burés, who has collaborated on jewelry with many prominent artists, including Louise Bourgeois, Jesús Soto, Carlos Cruz–Díez, Miquel Barceló, Carmen Herrera and Santiago Sierra. Burés will be joining us from his studio in Spain.

What you will discover:

- The luxury of artist jewels.

- The untold pleasure projects of artists such as Salvador Dail to Anish Kapoor.

- Learn analytical and visual skills.

- A glimpse into the mimi-masterpieces of some of the worlds greats.
