Course Outline

From Futurism to Pittura Metafisica, from Arte Povera to Transavanguardia, Italian art has played a fundamental role in the visual culture of the twentieth century, influencing everything from architecture to fashion. This short-course comprises three lectures and offers a unique opportunity to engage in a structured overview of the artistic production of Italy from the late nineteenth to the early twenty-first century.

What you will discover:

The participants will become familiar with the seminal works of artists affiliated with movements such as Divisionism, Futurism, Symbolism, Pittura Metafisica, Realism, Informale, Astrattismo, Arte Povera, Transavanguardia, and Postmodern Italian Art.
By the end of the programme, the participants will have acquired a historical understanding of recent Italian Art, and will have developed essential analytical skills to discuss, appreciate and enjoy the extraordinary visual achievements that Italian artists brought to the complex artistic discourse of the twentieth century.

Academic Profile

Andrea Mattiello

Andrea Mattiello is a Byzantine and Contemporary Art Historian and Curator.

He has been a research fellow at the International Centre for Architectural Studies "Andrea Palladio" in Vicenza and the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz, and has published and lectured extensively, collaborating as curator with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Birmingham, the Biennale di Venezia, and private galleries in Italy and the UK.

Trained in the History of Architecture, and in Visual Arts at the Università IUAV of Venice, he holds a PhD in Theory and History of Art at the School for Advanced Studies Ca’ Foscari/IUAV and a PhD in Byzantine Art History from the University of Birmingham.
