Out of the Darkness - A History of Light in Art
This four-day course will look at how the use, depiction and symbolism of light evolved in western European painting. We will begin with the use and symbolism of gold and gilding in early renaissance paintings and explore the way in which light and reflections were depicted as illusions. We will consider how the metaphor of light was used historically and how it became the stylistic language of chiaroscuro. Finally, we will look at how light itself was harnessed as a medium to produce images, giving birth to photography.
