Overview
This short course offers an introduction to the arts of the Middle Ages with a programme of six lectures
surveying exemplary artefacts of global Medieval Art.
The six lectures will provide a synthetic overview of the rich and complex art historical and artistic discussion covering the visual arts of the Mediterranean and beyond in the centuries between Late Antiquity and Early Renaissance Art. The course will develop from close scrutiny of a selection of case studies, such as small precious jewellery, mosaics, wall paintings, carved and sculpted decorations as well as monuments, belonging to international world heritage.
- How to build the foundations to appreciate of the production and major achievements of the arts in the Middle Ages.
- The relevant historical and artistic facts linked to the materials discussed during the lectures.
- How to develop analytical tools to further study and discuss the artistic production of the
Middle Ages and their socio-cultural contexts and implications.
