From Apple to Zero: An A-Z of Signs and Symbols in Art

A three day course that gives you the skills to understand how to analyse images and interpret signs and symbols

Overview Course Dates Academic Profile Additional Information Contact Us
Overview

Overview

Why include flies in paintings of flowers? Why is the virgin Mary usually depicted in blue? Why is the goddess Juno represented by a peacock? This three-day course will answer those and many other questions, using the playful format of the alphabet to uncover the hidden meanings of signs and symbols in western European painting. Looking at a wide range of paintings, including portraits, still lives, mythical and religious narratives, this course will give clients the ability to recognise, and make sense of, the iconography and hidden meanings in paintings.

Learning Outcomes

  • An understanding of how to analyse images and interpret signs and symbols
  • Ability to engage with and discuss the subjects and subtexts of painting
  • Acquire knowledge of art’s representation of biblical stories and classical myths

This course will be delivered online via Zoom. All participants will receive information in advance about how to access the course before it commences.
