Artist in Focus – Francis Bacon

11 February

Francis Bacon's long career was marked by an almost singular attention to representations of the human form. This course will assess his work through themes of portraiture, photography, theatricality, spontaneity, sexuality and religious iconography. Bacon's interest in both horror and humour, the absurd and the visceral, will be discussed.

Participants will

  • develop knowledge and understanding of Francis Bacon's practice and career
  • develop skills of close looking with a limited range of specific examples
  • develop vocabulary around painting in the later 20th century

-Enroll on to all three courses as a package for a discounted price-

Artist in Focus – Barbara Kruger

11 March

Barbara Kruger's career as a politically engaged provocateur is marked by her interest in making use of text. In public art works, installations and prints, Kruger has made works of art that confront issues around feminism, capitalism, reproductive rights and the value of art.

Participants will

  • develop knowledge and understanding of Barbara Kruger's practice and career
  • develop skills of close looking with a limited range of specific examples
  • develop vocabulary around installation and political art in the later 20th century

-Enroll on to all three courses as a package for a discounted price-

Artist in Focus – Gerhard Richter

13 April

Gerhard Richter's body of work is famously marked by a refusal to adhere to a specific medium or approach: he has made painting, sculpture, photography and installation. There are certain themes that emerge across his career, however: ideas of trauma and memory, the problems of expression and the elusiveness of the photographic image.

Participants will

  • develop knowledge and understanding of Gerhard Richter's practice and career
  • develop skills of close looking with a limited range of specific examples
  • develop vocabulary around painting in the later 20th century

-Enroll on to all three courses as a package for a discounted price-
