From Academy to Zoomorphism: An A-Z of Art Terms

Do you know your imprimatura from your underdrawing? your momento mori from your vedute? your cartoon from your predella? This three-day course will use the playful format of the alphabet to examine and explain the specialised vocabulary of art and art history. Covering terms relating to styles, techniques, materials and theories of western European art, the course will explore and elucidate the language used and needed to understand and discuss great works of art.

This course will be delivered online via Zoom. All participants will receive information in advance about how to access the course before it commences.

• Key insights into understanding and interpreting paintings

• Building confidence in discussing works of art

Academic Profile

Academic Profile

Aliki Braine- Born in Paris in 1976, Aliki Braine studied at The Ruskin School of Fine Art, Oxford, The Slade School of Fine Art, London and The Courtauld Institute where she was awarded a distinction for her masters in 17th century painting. Aliki has been a regular lecturer at the National Gallery since 2001 and also teaches at the Wallace Collection, Courtauld Gallery and for The Arts Society. She is an Associate Lecturer in the Department of Fine Art Photography for the University of the Arts London. Aliki is also a practicing artist who regularly exhibits her photographic work internationally.
