This course will chart the representation of wars and peace throughout the history of western European art, including the representation of historical battles and campaigns, the representation of the aftermath of war and the hard-won landscapes of peace, as well as images of the embodiment of these two polarities as Graeco-Roman deities. We will look at the works of artists dealing with these subjects across a broad sweep of time and place, including Uccello, Mantegna, Rubens and Picasso.
