This two-day course traces a history of the depiction of dreams and nightmares in western European painting. Images of people dreaming and of their nocturnal imaginings, the dreams and nightmares recounted in Christian narratives, and records of visions that serve as a metaphor for painting itself, will all be explored. We will be looking closely at works by artists as diverse as Piero della Francesca, Hieronymus Bosch, William Blake and Salvador Dali.
