What is modern in Chinese modern paintings?
Through this provocative question, renowned art historian, Professor Yeewan Koon, offers a fresh perspective into the art of Wu Guanzhong, Qi Baishi, Li Keran, Lin Fengmian, Zhang Daqian and other modern Chinese artists. We will investigate, in 20th century China, how historical events and personal journeys shaped the evolution of their art and Chinese painting. The lecture will be followed by guided tour of Christie’s Chinese paintings auction preview, led by Carmen Shek Cerne, Senior Specialist Head of Sale. Covering classical to modern and contemporary paintings, the tour offers insights into the practicalities and trends in collecting Chinese paintings, as well as the recent market for this category.
The course concludes with a handling session, to closely examine works featured in Christie’s auction this season, from brushstroke to compositional concepts. Through this exercise, we will be able to trace the traditions of Chinese classical painting, but also find artistic innovations that marked modernity.
